UK ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT CLAIM ADVICE

Our solicitors will represent the injured victim in a road traffic accident claim on a no win no fee basis. If the other driver has been identified then compensation is paid in full and no win no fee claims handled by our lawyers are genuinely risk free.

Winter Driving Precautions

Tyres

Make sure that they are properly inflated and that they have adequate tread - the legal minimum tread depth for car and similar tyres in the United Kingdom and throughout the European Community is at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three quarters of the breadth of tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre.

Wipers

If your wipers are worn they will leave a streaky view of the road ahead and distort your view. Make sure that your windscreen reservoir is filled with the correct mixture of washer fluid and water to ensure that it does not freeze on hitting the screen. Poor visibility is often the cause of collisions and of subsequent road traffic accident claim settlements which almost inevitably increases insurance costs.

Lights

It is essential that all lights including indicators and brake lights are working properly. Clean them before you set out and when you make a comfort stop.

Fuel

No one ever wishes to run out of fuel, but to run out miles from the nearest garage when it's snowing or foggy could be your worst Winter driving nightmare.

Anti-Freeze

The correct mixture of water and antifreeze is essential for winter driving as it can prevent the cooling water freezing in sub zero temperatures.

Fog

In poor visibility turn on your dipped headlights in order to see, and to enable other road users to see you. Notice how the car with no lights almost blends into the background! Use your fog lamps in thick fog but remember to switch them off again when conditions clear. The same advice applies to high intensity rear lights. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and don't hang on to it's rear lights.

Snow:

To avoid an accident and a subsequent and often expensive road traffic accident claim you should use extreme caution without any sudden movements of steering or brakes. Drive at a speed to suit the conditions and in the highest gear possible for that speed in order to prevent wheel spin. Plan your actions well in advance and avoid braking on corners. Try to keep moving, especially up hill, once you stop you may find it difficult to get moving again. If you have to stop, set off again with low revs and use the clutch to rock the car back and forth if you get stuck in a rut. If you have some salt/grit with you sprinkle some in front of the wheels to melt the ice. Remember - slowly does it - and drive as if you are driving on eggs.
