MOTORING FACTS AND FIGURES
There are currently over 30 million vehicles using the roads of Great Britain including in excess of 27 million private cars and this number is increasing by over 500,000 each year. Over the past few years road casualties they have been falling steadily resulting in less motor accident compensation claims despite the increase in traffic volume.
The main cause of car crashes is human error and investigation has shown that driver misjudgement is present to some degree in 98% of all incidents. Fatigue is a major problem and drivers falling asleep at the wheel cause thousands of deaths and injuries every year. Young and inexperienced motor car drivers are involved in a disproportionately high number of collisions which is reflected in the insurance premiums they have to pay. Drinking and driving is less of a problem than in the past but there seems remains a hard core of drivers who are still willing to take a chance. Motoring after taking drugs is becoming more widespread and causing the police and safety organizations much concern.
Tackling these problems has not proved to be an easy matter however police appear to be using stricter enforcement of the law with a zero tolerance policy in some areas. Speed limits are in force to protect and support vulnerable road users including cyclists and pedestrians and the police are often prosecuting those who exceed the speed limit by even a small amount. There are now considerably more unforgiving speed detection cameras than in the past which, whilst they are unpopular with drivers, in certain locations do save lives.
In some areas of the country anyone prosecuted for driving without due care and attention may be given the opportunity to attend a "Driver Improvement Scheme". In return for attending such a course at their own expense the offender will have the punishment reduced.
In an attempt to reduce the number of collisions and thereby reduce the number of motor accident compensation claims the driving test has seen some radical changes in recent years and has been extended to introduce a wider variety of road and traffic conditions and a Theory Test has now been introduced to test the candidate's knowledge of the rules of the road and the law. All this has meant that learners need to prepare themselves more fully before attempting the test. The Theory Test uses touch screen technology and candidates have to undergo a hazard perception test which involves observing video clips of road situations and quickly reacting to the hazards shown.
